How to get to the Bay of Plenty?

By car

From the North
Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty’s main city, is 218 kilometres from Auckland, a journey which takes approximately three hours by car using State Highway roads. Using State Highways’ 1, 2 and 27 there is a choice of two direct routes to Tauranga.

The roads are generally excellent all the way, with good passing lanes, good signposting and small towns in which to take a break on your journey.

Route 1 from the north – through the scenic Karangahake Gorge
From Auckland, take State Highway 1 south (southern motorway) and turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. In the next hour you will pass through the small towns of Ngatea, Paeroa and pass through the Karangahake Gorge. On reaching the town of Waihi, turn right at the first round about and drive south through Katikati to Tauranga.

Route 2 from the north – through the town of Matamata
From Auckland, take State Highway 1 south (southern motorway) and turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. At State Highway 27, when passing through a small town called Mangatarata, take the turn off to Matamata. Follow SH27 to Matamata, pass through this town and then follow the signposts to Tauranga, via the Kaimai Ranges. All roads are main highways.

From the south:
Coming from the south, Rotorua is 40 minutes’ drive on State Highway 2.

From Gisborne, through the Waioeka Gorge, take State Highway 2 towards Opotiki. Follow State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. This journey takes around three hours.
