Where is the Bay of Plenty?

Mount Maunganui, in the Bay of Plenty region, is located between the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape, on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

Mount Maunganui, close to Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty’s main city, is approximately 220 kilometres from Auckland, a journey which takes about 2.5 hours by car using State Highways 27 and 2. The roads are excellent all the way, with good passing lanes and small towns in which to take a break on your journey. However, expect some traffic delays if travelling from Auckland on Friday or Sunday afternoons and evenings, as the first part of the highway from Auckland also takes travellers to the Coromandel, another popular destination throughout the year.

Between Auckland and Mount Maunganui / Tauranga, stop in for a break at the beautiful Karangahake Gorge. Take an hour or two to explore the stunning river, old gold mining equipment and countless bush walks. A little closer to Tauranga, the historic gold mining town of Waihi is also another great stop. Check out the open goldmine, which is still in action today.

If you’re travelling from the south on your way to our Mount Maunganui apartments, Rotorua is just a 40 minute trip on State Highway 2. Gisborne is also easily accessible through the Waioeka Gorge, approximately a three hour drive from The Anchorage.
